Am I a good candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Both men and women seek laser hair removal to remove unwanted hair. Hair removal is commonly done on underarm, pubic area, legs, abdomen, lip, chin, back, buttocks, thighs, face, neck, chest, arms, and toes.
Laser technology works by targeting dark pigment. Therefore, it works best on pale skin and dark coarse hair. The lighter the skin and the darker and more coarse the hair, the better are the results. The best candidates are patients treating areas with dark coarse dense hair growth. However, those with darker complexions and/or lighter hair can also expect great results, but may have to undergo additional treatments.
What skin type would I fall under?
TYPE I: Never Tans, always burns Description: Fair skin, blonde hair, blue/green eyes
TYPE II: Occasionally tans, usually burns. Description: Fair skin, sandy – light brown hair, blue eyes
TYPE III: Often tans, sometimes burn. Description: Medium skin, brown hair, brown eyes
TYPE IV: Always tans, never burns. Description: Olive skin, brown/black hair, brown/black eyes
TYPE V: Never burns. Description: Dark skin, black hair, black eyes
TYPE VI: Never burns. Description: Black skin, hair, and eyes
How many treatments will I need and how far apart are the treatments?
With the CynoSure Palomar Vectus laser most patients need at least 4-6 effective treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Because hair grows in cycles, several sessions are necessary in order to affect all hair on any given area. However, some patients respond well in just 2 sessions. Due to length of hair growth cycles, treatments are usually needed once every 4-6 weeks. Hair cycle length varies depending on body part. Face usually requires more frequent treatments whereas legs and back need less frequent treatments. Shedding of all treated hair should be expected within 3 weeks of each treatment. The hair that doesn’t shed and is growing as usual after 3 weeks has likely been either missed or not affected due to inappropriate settings. If this is the case, a touchup treatment is necessary at that time. All 6-8 treatments should be good effective treatments in order to achieve good results. Once the hair sheds, patients should experience a hair-free period for several weeks. Once new hair comes in again, patients should come in for their next session.
What should I expect before my treatment?
A mild sunburn-like sensation is expected; usually lasts 2-24 hours but may persist for 72 hours. Prolonged redness, crusting or blistering may occur, but are rare. An antibiotic ointment or moisturizing lotion may be applied twice a day. We recommend applying cool gel/ice packs to the area every hour for 15 minutes until symptom(s) subside. Avoid sun and tanning exposure for 2 weeks after treatment, and apply a moisturizer to dry or itchy skin twice a day. Appearance of hair growth or stubble will be evident 7- 30 days after treatment, but this is not new growth. Additional treatments may be scheduled as new hair begins to grow – Clipping or shaving of the treatment area is permitted. Avoid excessive exercise, pools, Jacuzzi’s, saunas and hot tubs for 7 days or until redness is resolved. No not pick or remove scabs or crusting.
How long does a laser session take?
Laser is a fast and effective treatment, depending on your area of treatment you can be in and out in as little as 15 minutes.
What should I expect after my treatment? What’s the post treatment care?
Patients should not wax, epilate, or remove hair with the root using any other hair removal method for at least 6 weeks prior to their first session and throughout their course of treatments. The hair needs to be in place in order to be targeted by laser as laser devices targets the pigment in the hair.
The area to be treated should be shaved 1-2 days prior to treatments so that the energy is targeted towards the hair follicle and not wasted it on the hair above the skin’s surface. Treating unshaved skin can result in burning of the skin by singed hairs.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
Laser hair removal has fast become one of the most effective options for permanent hair reduction. However, it is to be expected to have 1-2 additional treatments each year for maintenance.
